Macramé Cord FAQs

Multiply your finished project length by 4x–8x based on knot density. Folding over a dowel with a lark’s head knot doubles the cord needed. Always add 15% buffer for fringe and trimming.

A medium 60cm wall hanging with 16 strands typically needs 50–65 meters of 4mm cotton cord, with each strand cut to approximately 3.5–4 meters.

Yes — thicker cords (5mm–6mm) take more volume inside each knot. Add an extra 10–15% when using cord above 4mm thickness.

Working cords tie the knots and shorten fast. Filler cords are passive — they can be cut to 1/3 to 1/2 the length of working cords. This calculator estimates working cord lengths.

Quick Cord Rules

4x multiplier — Loose, open patterns. Great for beginners.

5.5x multiplier — Standard square knots. Most everyday projects.

7x multiplier — Dense berry knots or complex wall art.

Lark’s Head mount? — Always doubles your cord need.

Cord Buying Tip

“Always buy 20% more than your estimate. Running out mid-project means restarting with a different dye lot.”

Best choice for beginners: 4mm 3-strand twisted cotton in 100m or 200m spools.
